Anne Hegerty praises I’m a Celebrity campmates after leaving jungle

Anne Hegerty has become the fifth contestant to leave I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! following a public vote.

As her name was called by hosts Declan Donnelly and Holly Willoughby in last night’s show, the professional quizzer’s face broke into a smile before she shouted out: “Yes!”

During her 19 days in the jungle, Hegerty, a devout Catholic and quiz master on ITV’s The Chase, opened up about her struggles with Asperger’s syndrome and was seen sharing her faith with the camp, as she prayed a Rosary for fellow campmate Emily Atack as the former Inbetweeners star prepared for a Bushtucker Trail.

After saying her goodbyes, Hegerty joined Willoughby and Donnelly in the studio where she praised her fellow contestants for helping her struggle through life in the jungle.

She said: “I couldn’t have remotely dealt with it without 10 fantastic other people. It was all down to them. It was all about them. They have been so kind.”

Hegerty follows Rita Simons, Noel Edmonds, Malique Thompson-Dwyer and Sair Khan in leaving the jungle.

The 60-year-old also spoke of how her autism had made her time in the jungle more challenging.

Sipping from a glass, she said: “It was awful at the beginning…It really hit me, and I was like, ‘What have I done? I can’t remotely do this. What was I thinking?’

“If people understood, when you suddenly come up against a situation which you thought you had imagined it, and you hadn’t. Sometimes people say autism is a failure of imagination. We are not good at imagining outcomes.

“We are not really able to imagine what something is going to be like. We think we have done all the work we need to. I was just a zombie at Snake Rock for at least the first 24 hours.”

The Sun Online previously reported that Hegerty had consulted a Catholic priest to discuss how she would be able to practice her faith in the jungle. She also took a prayer book into the jungle with her, as well as a handheld fan as her luxury item.

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! continues at 9pm on ITV.
