Mexican actor plans to build world’s tallest statue of Christ

A prominent Catholic Mexican actor has launched an initiative to build the tallest statue of Jesus Christ in the world – over double the size of the Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Eduardo Verástegui, 44, known for his roles in films Bella and Little Boy, said the statue – which will be located in Tamaulipas, one of Mexico’s most violent states – will be known as The Christ of Peace, reported Mexico News Daily.

The Christ of Peace will be 77-meters-tall, dwarfing Rio de Janeiro’s famous Christ the Redeemer statue, which is only 30 meters – 38 meters with its pedestal.

Verástegui hopes the project will leave a legacy of peace for the state in which he was born and promoters have said that the Christ of Peace will represent “a message of faith, love, hope and peace”.

Architect Fernando Romero will design the statue with his arms spread in a gesture showing him embracing the people of Mexico and an esplanade, with the capacity for 10,000 people, will also be built around the statue with a church, restaurants, stores, a convention centre, a shelter for pilgrims, a hotel, an amphitheatre, a handicrafts market, funicular and cable car stations and a residential area.

Verástegui is planning to travel to Rome in order to present the project to Pope Francis and, while no details about the cost or funding have been released, Church officials said construction should be under way early this year.
