Singer’s Lourdes prayers for stricken F1 ace Schumacher

A celebrity friend of Michael Schumacher has revealed that she went on pilgrimage to Lourdes to pray for the seven-time Formula One champion, who continues to recover from a skiing accident in 2013.

French singer Mireille Mathieu, a devout Catholic who followed Schumacher’s career for years and was frequently trackside during his races, shared her revelation to mark the Formula One legend’s 50th birthday, which was celebrated earlier this month.

“He is a great champion and a very extraordinary person, sincere and friendly,” Ms Mathieu told German magazine Leisure Week.

Ms Mathieu recalled her shock at hearing about the traumatic brain injury Schumacher suffered during a skiing accident while holidaying in the French Alps five years ago.

“I immediately prayed for him and implored the Lord for help,” she said. “I took a pilgrimage to Lourdes and lit a candle for him, and I would have liked to give him some holy water from there to make him well again.”

Schumacher, who is also a Catholic, previously met St John Paul II in 2005, something he described as “very special”.

“It’s something very special,” he told Rome Reports at the time. “It’s something great for us to have been able to be here and hopefully to take all the emotions into the future for us and transport it into motivation and obviously as well success, that’s the wishes from the pope to us.”
