When an ice cream is more than just an ice cream

As the UK basks in a heatwave set to rival the summer of 1976 – which saw temperatures peak at 35 degrees, most children will be enjoying the sunshine with an ice cream.

But, in Syria for little Hani (centre) with his friend Kadan (right) their ice creams are a lot more than just an ice cream.

The boy’s social worker Aboud said: “The boys were playing and then suddenly got into a fight. I went to buy them both an ice cream, to calm the situation down.”

Syrian children inside the country and in neighbouring countries face staggering levels of trauma. Caritas Syria, a partner of UK aid agency CAFOD, provides counselling sessions for children and their families traumatised by the eight-year-long conflict. The project has reached over 1,000 children across Aleppo and Damascus.

“Sitting down together with our ice creams was an effective way to get the boys to talk and laugh together, and ‘mend’ their friendship”, said Aboud.
