Netflix captures priests’ response to gun horrors

A documentary exploring the journeys of two Catholic priests following the school shootings at Sandy Hook and Dunblane is available on Netflix.

The short documentary, Lessons from a School Shooting: Notes from Dunblane, follows Mgr Bob Weiss, parish priest of St Rose of Lima Church in Newtown, Connecticut, in the days following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, where 20 children, between the ages of six and seven, and six adult staff members were shot dead.

The documentary examines the relationship formed between Mgr Weiss and Mgr Basil O’Sullivan, the parish priest of the Holy Family Church in Dunblane, Scotland, after the Irish priest contacts him via email with a message of support.

Mgr O’Sullivan tells Mgr Weiss how in 1996 his community relied on him amid the horrific Dunblane school massacre, where 16 school children and one teacher were gunned down at the hands of an unhinged lone gunman.

In the ensuing months, the two priests forge a bond across the Atlantic through a series of letters sharing experiences of trauma and recovery and Mgr O’Sullivan journeys across the Atlantic to bring solace to Mgr Weiss and the community of Newtown.
