“We need a respectful, mutual listening, free of ideology and predetermined agendas.” Pope Francis, Let us Dream, December 2020

Pope asks Ronaldinho, ‘Pele or Maradona?’

Pope Francis revealed plans for a charity football match as he met Brazilian ace Ronaldinho at the Vatican last week.

During the meeting, Scholas Occurrentes, an educational organisation which links 400,000 schools across the world, announced that it would be sponsoring a celebrity Match for Peace at Rome’s Olympic Stadium on 29th May, the day after the Champions League Final.

Ronaldinho, as well as other football legends such as Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, featured in the first Match for Peace, which took place in 2014.
Funds raised from the match went to various charities, including Scholas Occurrentes, which was set up by the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Sciences and received a lot of involvement from Pope Francis, the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires.

During the meeting, the former Barcelona star was put on the spot by the Holy Father, who asked, “Who was a better soccer player, Pele or Maradona?” However, the two agreed to “leave them guessing and in suspense” as to the star’s response.
